Lexiphone funded a significant US/UK field trial (conducted by two leading healthcare and educational institutions) of a European developed and tested method for the treatment of dyslexia.
The U.S. National Institutes of Health estimate that approximately 15% of the U.S. population is affected by learning disabilities. Dyslexia is a learning disability characterized by problems in expressive or receptive, oral or written language. The Lexiphone treatment is to be introduced to serve this very large American market.
- Treatment: The Lexiphone treatment is a remedial approach designed to retrain dyslexics auditory attention and processing of speech information. Key components of the training, or reeducation, involve use of an amplifier-like audio device, the Lexiphone, which is patented in Europe and the United States, to:
-
- acoustically highlight the melodic contour of the speech, and
-
- draw attention to sound-, syllable-, and word-level segments of speech through auditory feedback of an intermittent speech signal.
-
- Field Trials: The treatment has undergone successful field trials in Europe and is currently undergoing an exhaustive field trial in England and the United States.
-
- Audience: The principal user of this treatment is a Speech Therapist or Speech Pathologist.
- There are other applications for this treatment method.
-
- Foreign language learning
Assuming that certain segments of our adult population suffer a higher proportion of learning disabilities than the general population (i.e., prisons and the enlisted ranks of our military services), we plan to access the need for:
- Treatment for our prison population
- Treatment for members of the military
